Mercutio is actually critical for the couple as his death makes Romeo mad with rage and after he kills Tybalt banished. If it wasn't for Mercutio dying Romeo never would have left Verona and then they he would have easily found out the plan and wouldn't have killed himself. Mercutio may actually be the first domino to fall in the downfall of Romeo and Juliet's love.
